Minivan Timeline, 1995 - 1999

1995-1996

  • Five millionth minivan sold.

  • Company begins to manufacture right-hand-drive minivans in Graz, Austria.

  • Introduces third generation of minivans, which offer several “minivan firsts” including cab-forward design, reclining child safety seats and a driver-side sliding door.

  • Dodge Caravan earns Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” award, a first for the minivan category.

1997

  • Six millionth minivan sold.

  • The Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS) is available only on 1997 Chrysler minivans models.

  • Traction control is added as an option.

1998

  • Seven millionth minivan sold.

  • Company celebrates 15th anniversary of the minivan.

  • Rear seatback-mounted grocery bag hooks available on 1998 model-year minivans.

1999

  • Eight millionth minivan sold.

  • Luxury minivan market segment expands with introduction of 1999 Chrysler Town & Country Limited.

  • New features include chrome wheels, chrome door handles, body-color luggage rack, winged badge on liftgate, a rear-seat center arm rest, upgraded seating material and carpeting, and steering-wheel audio controls.
