August 31, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -  The Dodge brand is extending production of the 2011 Nitro through December of 2011 to meet a burst in customer demand. Through the first seven months of 2011, Nitro sales are up 24 percent compared with the same period in 2010, and the brand is planning to meet customer demand ahead of the vehicles previously scheduled phase out.

For the extended model year, the 2011 Dodge Nitro R/T will join the Heat model as the last in the line of the sporty five-seat SUV from Dodge. Featuring a 260 horsepower 4.0-liter V-6 engine, performance-tuned suspension and unique design cues, the R/T is the sportiest Nitro model to date.

Dodge Nitro R/T features signature bold design cues of a monochromatic grille with bright billet inserts and standard 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. Backing the assertive looks is a performance suspension with an independent front and five-link rear system for improved cornering and increased traction. The standard 4.0-liter V-6 engine delivers 260 horsepower and 265 ft.-lbs. of torque and is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission that allows for quick acceleration and offers a manual shift mode.

Available as a 4x2 or 4x4 model, Dodge Nitro is designed to perform in any climate.

The interior of the five-passenger is spacious, functional and flexible for people and cargo. Dodge Nitro R/T has standard power heated leather seats, and its innovative cargo seating flexibility offers a fold-flat front-passenger seat and fold-flat second-row seats. Second-row seats also recline for added passenger comfort.

Dodge Nitro R/T has an available towing package that is capable of towing up to 5,000 lbs., and many standard safety and security features, including anti-lock brake system (ABS), all-speed traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), front-row active head restraints and front and side-curtain air bags.

The Dodge Nitro is built at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio.
