The excitement of an edition that has further consolidated the bond between the brand and the "Red Arrow" is still tangible, with 47 cars at the starting line and three on the podium, 90 years after the first victory. International stars, drivers and enthusiasts were among the crews of the Alfa Romeo cars entered by FCA Heritage. Marcus Ericsson and Charles Leclerc, the drivers of the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team, were also present, driving a 1932 Gran Premio Tipo B and a 1955 750 Competizione.

1928 was the year of Alfa Romeo's first win at the Mille Miglia, and 2018 has seen a record-breaking edition with 450 teams competing and three Alfa Romeo cars taking the top three places: confirmation of the brand's unbreakable bond with "the most beautiful race in the world."

The Mille Miglia bid farewell to Rome in the early morning, in bright sunlight. Amongst the many small popular miracles ascribed to the Red Arrow is the unique ability to cut through the morning traffic on Rome's infamously busy ring-road, the Grande Raccordo Annulare.

Yesterday, the caravan threaded its way down the Italian peninsula from Milano Marittima to Rome. The excitement of the race mingled with the beauty of the landscapes, making a truly thrilling day. At Pesaro, two and four wheels met in a warm embrace, as the town also welcomed the 12th stage of the Giro d’Italia, for which Alfa Romeo is the official car.

After the sealing, racing and technical inspection procedures, the first stage of the 2018 Mille Miglia got under way yesterday. A record-breaking edition, with a total of 440 crews taking part, plus ten in the "Military Category," giving this year's event a total of 900 people from 36 countries across every continent. The 450 cars accepted to take part in the 2018 Mille Miglia are of 72 different brands, and Alfa Romeo has a very large group, with 47 cars entered from official and private teams.

The Mille Miglia has been the supreme expression of the passion for cars for more than 90 years. It was created in 1927 as a mass start race beginning and ending in Brescia, over a route leading down to Rome and then back up the Italian peninsula that totalled 1,600 kilometres or 1,000 imperial miles ("mille miglia").

2018 marks the 90th anniversary since Alfa Romeo’s first victory at the Mille Miglia. The race takes place in Italy beginning next Wednesday, May 16. It will run through Saturday, May 19.
