FCA US Employees and Habitat for Humanity Detroit, Oakland and Macomb Build Special Projects, Partnership in Celebration of #WorldHabitatDay

  • FCA US brings Habitat for Humanity Detroit, Oakland and Macomb affiliates together for the first time
  • Special projects underscore the importance of every person having a decent, affordable place to live
October 3, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -  In celebration of World Habitat Day, Habitat for Humanity Detroit, Oakland and Macomb affiliates came together for the first time to partner with FCA US LLC employees through its Motor Citizens volunteer program to construct picnic tables, storage sheds, and wheelchair ramps and platforms for use in homes across southeast Michigan.

Today’s event, which drew more than 125 FCA US employees to the parking lot of the Walter P. Chrysler Museum, can trace its roots back to a day more than 30 years ago. Recognizing the importance of promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to live, the United Nations General Assembly declared (Resolution 40/202 of December 17, 1985) that the first Monday in October would be #WorldHabitatDay.

“We are so thankful to begin the FCA US collaboration right here in our southeast Michigan region while bringing awareness to world housing needs,” said Sandy Pearson, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan. “The Motor Citizens program keeps employees connected to the communities where they live and work, and Habitat for Humanity is proud to provide a platform and partnership for Motor Citizens in action.”

FCA US employees have been long-standing Habitat volunteers and, in 2015 alone, joined with Habitat for Humanity Detroit, Oakland and Macomb affiliates to help build numerous new homes across the region.

“It is a privilege to come together with the Detroit, Oakland and Macomb Habitat affiliates on this important day, which highlights housing as a human right,” said Lesley Slavitt, Head of Civic Engagement, FCA US LLC. “Service is at the core of our culture, and our collaborative efforts today are a fitting highlight of how we seek to reinforce what we believe across all that we do.”

FCA US employees also donated household items to help restock Habitat for Humanity ReStores, which are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that are open to the public and help fund Habitat operations. The donated items, which included new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories and building materials, including paint and lumber, were loaded into a fleet of Ram trucks.

“Ram truck owners have a strong sense of community and are often the go-to people others can rely on when help is needed,” said Mike Manley, Head of Ram Brand, FCA – Global. “Just as Ram Nation volunteers helped raise the walls on a Habitat for Humanity house this summer, Ram was proud to come out again today to fill truck beds with donated household items and deliver them to Habitat for Humanity ReStores.”
